Pacific Engagement Visa Selection 2026: PNG Ballot Guide

Written by Migration Star Team | Oct 18, 2026, 12:39:33 PM

If you registered in the 2026-27 Pacific Engagement stream ballot and you are from Papua New Guinea, you may be wondering when you will hear back and what to do if the email arrives. Registration closed on 29/07/2026, and selections for PNG registrants are being made over a long window. This guide explains Pacific Engagement visa selection 2026 in plain English: what the Notification of Selection letter is, how long you have to act, and how to prepare so you are not scrambling. Information current as at 16/10/2026.

Where the 2026-27 PEV ballot stands for PNG

The Department of Home Affairs publishes a ballot country status table. For Papua New Guinea, registration opened on 01/07/2026 and closed on 29/07/2026, and the PNG selection period runs from 05/08/2026 to 26/02/2027. The Department explains that "closed" means no further registrations can be submitted and the selection process is pending for that ballot.

In practical terms, PEV ballot results for PNG are described by the Department as a selection period rather than a single results date. A registrant could be selected at any point in that period, and the Department says it cannot give you information about the status of your ballot. It will tell you if you are successful.

Who could register, and why that still matters after selection

The 2026 PEV fact sheet sets out the ballot registration criteria. To register, a person had to be aged between 18 and 45 years (inclusive) at the start of the ballot registration open period, hold a valid passport issued by a participating country, and be born in a participating country or have a parent who was. New Zealand citizens could not register, and a person could not register twice in the same ballot. Papua New Guinea is one of the 2026-27 participating countries.

These criteria still matter after selection because the registration is the starting point for everything that follows. The Department says that partners and legally dependent children must be included in the ballot registration, and that you must later apply using the same passport you registered with. If your circumstances have changed since 29/07/2026, such as a new passport, it is worth getting advice on the effect before you lodge.

What the Notification of Selection letter is

The Department states that it will send randomly selected participants a Notification of Selection letter. The letter contains a link and instructions for applying. Your registration status in ImmiAccount will also change to "Selected", which the Department describes as: "You have been randomly selected in the ballot to apply for a Pacific Engagement visa."

It is important to understand what selection is and is not. A ballot registration is not a visa application, and being selected does not mean you have a visa. Selection means you are invited to apply, and your application is then assessed against the visa requirements.

The invitation expiry date and your 120-day window

Timing is the part that catches people out. The Department's ballot overview says the visa application must be submitted on or before the invitation expiry date provided in your letter. The after you register page then spells out the length of the window:

"You will have 120 calendar days from the date of selection to complete and submit a visa application online." (Department of Home Affairs)

That is the Pacific engagement visa invitation expiry rule in a sentence. Because the 120 days run from the date of selection, check your email, spam folder and ImmiAccount regularly while the PNG selection period is open. The Department also says you must complete the application using the same passport you used to register, and if your passport expires before you apply, you must update your details through ImmiAccount.

What you will need to apply once selected

The 2026 PEV fact sheet explains that, if you are selected, you apply for the visa and must have a formal job offer in Australia. You also need to meet other visa requirements, such as English language, character and health checks, and you must hold a valid visa if you are applying from inside Australia. The Information Guide adds that you should understand what documentation to include, such as health checks, police checks, language checks, your job offer and valid passports.

We have not set out the detailed rules for what makes a job offer acceptable here, because they should be read from the Department's live visa page when you apply. It is sensible to start thinking about employers before a letter arrives, as the job offer is a requirement you will need to meet.

A practical starting checklist:

  • a valid passport, the same one used to register

  • a formal job offer in Australia

  • English language evidence, as the Department requires

  • police checks and health check arrangements

Partners, children and the 3,000 place allocation

The Australian Government will allocate up to 3,000 visa places per year, and that figure includes partners and dependent children. The fact sheet explains that partners and legally dependent children must be included in the ballot registration, and if you are selected, they are included in the invitation to apply. The Information Guide notes that with this visa, you and your family can live, work and study anywhere in Australia.

The Pacific Engagement visa is a permanent residence visa for eligible citizens of participating Pacific countries and Timor-Leste. Whether any individual applicant meets every requirement is a matter for the Department's assessment, so avoid treating selection as a guaranteed outcome.

Not selected yet? Planning for PNG registrants and students in Brisbane

The selection period runs to 26/02/2027, so a registration that has not been selected yet is still pending. We cannot tell you when, or whether, any individual registration will be selected, and the Department does not give ballot status updates.

If you are a PNG student or graduate in Brisbane, it can be sensible to keep your current visa in order while you wait, and to understand the other options on your timeline. Our guide to the PNG student visa in Australia for 2026 explains the current student visa rules. Keep your ImmiAccount details and passport current, and be cautious of anyone who claims they can improve your chances in a random ballot.
